I'm Autistic, Now What?
United Kingdom
Приєднався 15 лис 2022
I’m a 28 year old late-diagnosed autistic (& ADHD) woman from the UK. Without UA-cam, I never would’ve discovered that I am autistic. So now I’m returning the favour! I want to share videos that will help others discover their own neurodivergence and also videos about what to do post this new self-discovery. Post-diagnosis support for autistic adults is scarce. You’re autistic, which is great information to have, but…now what? Is there medication you could take? Is your career right for someone like you? Should you go self-employed? How do you tell your parents? Your employer? And what do you do if they don’t take you seriously?
Basically...how can you use this knowledge to create a life that really emphasises your strengths and minimises your struggles?
I’m still figuring it out! Let’s learn together ♥️
Love,
Meg x

Love the horns! So cute
At 10:20 I was wondering what she meant about not understanding the food, as it's thanksgiving foods, but then I realized not everyone is from the US. The meat she was talking about was turkey😭
This is the most roundabout thinking I've seen in like.... 2 days. Lmao.
unrelated, but i really like ur shirt!!
"Were not able to eliminate the harm of the internalized experience" THIS. SO MUCH THIS. I can Mr. Fixit my way through every struggle life throws as me, because it's thrown so very much at me. But that doesn't mean I actually *feel ok about any of that inside*.
Autistic media obsessions are literally so common, many people outside the US have American accents because they learned hoe to talk from media with is majority American. My little brother has what we call the "tism accent" and I've met three other people who also have it.
Every time there is a thunderstorm I rewatch 1980s movie The Labyrinth. I regularly read Labyrinth fanfiction, I know so much Labyrinth trivia and trivia about ppl even vaguely related to the movie, and I can quote most of the movie verbatim. The Labyrinth is the most extreme example of this, but I do this with a few different movies. That is movies being a special interest. It's a bit more intense than a neurotypical person would engage in. (Edit for spelling)
I like to think im a salted butterscotch, but tiramisu is my favorite ice cream. 😅 I don't know what that means, but figured I'd participate. ❤
Trying to cut down on my comments, I knew I'd be tempted to say a lot on this one. 👀 And I was correct.
This group and similar groups... It's like they're looking for targets to gaslight. It's a denial of reality, the statistics show the number faking is sooo small and fairly harmless. The 3 things these people seem to never believe, autism, identity, and who you like. It's very reminiscent of Transvestigators or pro conversion therapy homophobes. I'm convinced they panic whenever someone doesn't exist as they think they should. It's such an unreasonable desire for control over other people, I doubt they keep it all to those subjects. They just think they're allowed to manipulate people on those subjects.
I’m the only child in my family who is autistic and as a kid everyone asked my mother if I was adopted bc I had an accent . My one daughter , out of four kids, and one of her sons , out of many of my grandkids, has that same accent. I’ve not been diagnosed but I’m clearly an aspie, and many of my kids and grandkids are, but I never knew this accent thing was an autism thing.
38:02 - agreed! I've literally managed to develop a shell script (a small piece of software) to modify some system files that occasionally get re-installed when I update my operating system -- they get updated, and some notifications turn on that I don't want. So I run my script, and it modifies the library to turn them the f back off again. I need to figure out how to do that for some other notifications, too, because yeah. Gah!
When people tell me what to do, I feel like I'm not purposely CHOOSING to do the opposite, but that I have to. If someone says I have to watch a show, for example, my brain almost shuts off and says "now we can never watch that show until people stop telling me to watch it" and there's a legit blockage when I try to do what's demanded of me
Am an adult that didn't get diag'd properly as a kid and didn't realize I was autistic til my youngest son was diag'd and my last gf got her own diags. Saw so much of myself in the behaviors they received their diags for and started looking into it. The more I look, read, and learn, the more I realize this has been my entire life and I'm *still* trying to learn how to deal with it. This entire episode was like hearing someone talk about why my teenage years were so difficult for me. Learned that I mask constantly even now: I'm a learned extrovert. I am a silly, makes silly remarks and noises a lot, makes people laugh a lot jokester who looks like a rock star, plays guitar and sings like one, and lived the rockstar life a few times....but it's mostly a fun outer layer to the mean hardass guy inside that generally dislikes people and doesn't really tolerate anyone's bullshit. It *does* ostracize the person inside a bit...but that's mainly because I *prefer* being the jokester to the mean, angry, pain entity.
Best wishes for you to educate us all. ❤
I dont see why people think its negative to have a reaction to something that makes you happy. I know its different expression than a neurotypical person but theres nothing wrong with that people will alwayd be hating :(
Misery loves company; some people are simply mean and that’s simply what they do. 🤷♀️ It’s not easy sometimes, but usually the best thing is to ignore people and do you. My grandma told me once, she was born in the 40s, sometimes you just gotta give one really good jab to the jaw; apparently that sets people straight lmao 😂 thanks grandma, for caring ❤️❤️❤️ Edit: incidentally, my grandma is still around and she fears no one, she’s kind of scary lol she also likes to go to protests when she believes in a cause. She’s awesome!💛💛💛
My mother and my sister got their diagnose this year, so I'm observing myself. On this video: 1. Interruptions don't cause you distress - mild 2. Social situations are not chaotic - no, I get it 3. You don't monologue - no, terms come naturally to me 4. You're flexible with how you spend your time - I love doing nothing, but I hate when it's my nothing day and someone comes with a plan 5. You don't always say what you mean - yes, I lie if I have to 6. Noisy environments don't bother you - noise is ok for me 7. You're not detail focused - the dolphin paper IS ME (I'm a Phd student in Literature) 8. You don't get stuck on a mental loop - when I'm anxious, and I can stop it 9. You don't really fidget - skin picking So, I'm still not sure.
LOVE YOUR OUTFIT love bees
I just always hated authority.
All I could think was there was a step missing.😅 My brain instantly said if the girl is missing, she had to climb in the box, or was pushed in the box. And why does the Grandma (?) look sad in the last picture??
*GASP* BEE EARRINGS!!! :O
Thanks for sharing ❤
Wow someone elts does the fabric thing I do it with the labels on clothes always have it with you I'm forever getting piss taken out of me for it (in a loving way)
I've actually had a fascination for the Titanic for decades, like it keeps drawing me back. I try not to focus on it too much because it depresses me and it's heartbreaking in a way I can't describe, and being autistic it hits me all that much harder. I've never considered it a special interest of mine, but perhaps in a way it is.
in college i would go to the quiet section of the library and there would be noises like that and it drove me crazy when people were sniffing or i could hear little things like that. in class too when i was in public school.
Totally agree with everything you've said ❤ One thing I did think about was: I get why people speculate because they just really want to see themselves represented. Which also means we only see the default when we look at people, we always see heterosexual and neurotypical for example until the person says otherwise. It is a shame some celebrities don't want to say things about this, but I also totally understand it because we don't have a safe space yet in the world where it is okay to not be heterosexual and/or neurotypical. So it is all just very complicated
„Others have it harder than you, so you are not allowed to accept your disability and try to NORMALIZE it“ that is the vibe it is giving
i had to self diagnose due to financial problems people r really stupid… american healthcare system is expensive god forbid someone isnt a multimillionaire
this video was kinda odd to listen to whilst doing some revision because my name is Sienna and i’m autistic hahaha
I have this idea that non-verbal autistic people choose not to speak because they don't see the reason or value in speaking. I think back to "normal" things I didn't (or don't) do and I recognize that I don't do them because I don't see a value or need to do it. I then wonder how many non-verbal autistic people simply think, "why make mouth noises to communicate? I can get my needs met, why waste the time and energy?"
I read this book that compared autism to being deaf : it's a condition. You can thrive with it, but can't be expected to live your best life without your diagnosis. On that note: you wouldn't discredit a deaf person for being able to adapt efficiently, nor would you tell them they're glamorizing deafness by being happy.
❤❤❤
My autistic experience has essentially consisted of realizing that I am a completely different sort of fish than every other fish in the ocean around me. Also, because you asked: "thin air" is lower pressure, less dense. it is literally thinner. lower oxygen content. Humidity can also be a part of it but does not have to be. You can very much feel the difference breathing thin air vs thick air. Meltdowns, for me, feel like the line from that Marylin Manson song, Mechanical Animals - "I was a hand grenade that never stopped exploding."
I think the saddest thing about fakedisordercringe is that a few years ago the staff were trying to fix the subreddit by putting the focus on correcting misinformation and calling out people you can PROVE are faking, instead of bullying everyone you just don't see as mentally ill or neurodivergent for whatever reason. I liked this idea a lot better even if it was still iffy. But the owner of the subreddit suddenly demoted everyone who was working on that one day, promoted people who wanted the old subreddit back, and reversed any action they took. No communication whatsoever.
you don't need to waste your time reading my rant, this vid triggered me 😂 when I am stable and can do my own thing I am low support need, some people confuse that with, oh so you can live a day to day life and don't need the provisions that keep you stable 😮 people can br so dense, especially the government, no idiot, if those provisions are removed you will see how autistic I am, me being stable and happy is because of these tools/behaviors/medication if you remove them it will cost you a lot more money. it's like someone with epilepsy, some people can live a decent life when they have medications but when you take those meds away they're back where they started if not worse. an autistic child is this way because he doesn't have the tools yet and doesn't know what he or she needs to thrive or have parents that make it worse by 'protecting' them (in the process preventing the child to gather the tools they need) even if autism is invisible, that doesn't mean it's gone. if you ask my neighbors I am well adjusted, social and happy, she doesn't need help... that's right, I don't, untill I experience pressure, like keeping my garden perfect or having a doctors visit planned. but they won't see that unless I tell them, the only thing they can notice is my curtains are closed during the day... until someone asks me about it on a bad day, then the curtains will be open but I won't leave the bedroom I guess 😅
watched for a joke, came out genuinely wondering if i am autistic.
Neurotypicals forbid neurodivergent people be joyous 😭😭 Like they hate when we frolic for even a second LMAO
When I melt down, I don't lose control of my behavior, instead my valuation of "is this worth it?" in my thought process is cut out of the loop and I react much more on lizard brain impulse. If someone is getting in my space I either turtle up or yell at them to leave me the eff alone. I tend to just stop responding, stop talking, and shut the world out, but if some people keep pushing it can boil over into lashing out.
16:52 there is such a underlying hatred in this subreddit that is so concerning, like you don't hate *fake autistics* you hate autism. You hate seeing autisic joy and success. This sub is just gross
*Being able to make friends AND keep them.
They harassed me for being queer and trans 😂 totally not like a whole lot of autistic people have a difficulty with gender binaries
Its very weird autism did not ruin my life society who made the world ablelist ruined my life
Autistic people are far far better at identifying other autistic people than any doctor.
I'm not diagnosed on paper due to the biases of the doctors testing me as a child (they admitted I showed all the signs but didn't legally document it because I was born female.) Because of this, we didn't get access to the type of education I needed or any therapy and guidance for my parents and I. We had to push through. I doubt I'm autistic enough for Abby's mother. I had years of speech therapy and dental work covered due to my cleft palate, which were both amazing for autism reasons too; I lagged in certain areas of speech and I sucked my thumb until I was far too old, further ruining my teeth. As a kid, I read about 5 levels above everyone my age and was considered "gifted" in certain subjects. That "gift" crashed and burned at 16. I had to learn the majority of my social skills by mimicing others and masking. As an adult, I guess I'm somewhere in the middle with support needs. I can cook, take care of my dogs, drive a car, and even work some jobs! But I also have a horrendous social battery, my hygiene habits are questionable, I struggle to tell when I'm hungry or need to use the bathroom until it's urgent, my unrelated chronic pain conditions put me in sensory overload more often than I'd like, I still struggle to have legible handwriting, and I ask other people to ask questions on my behalf due to major rejection sensitivity. This is just a *few* of my issues. I don't need as much help as some people but that doesn't magically make me capable of functioning on a neurotypical level 24/7. I'm in the middle of saving money to pay for an adult diagnosis, or rediagnosis in my case. I want it for when I return to university and for entering the workforce past the minimum wage jobs I do now. I'm not looking for handouts, despite what Abby's mum thinks of people like me, just the option to receive a helping hand when I need it.
I feel the passion from @ohissabee's response, she is right to be angry and raises some amazingly on-point points
Here are the 9 reasons you might not be autistic from the video: You don't have a big external reaction or internal response to interruptions: If you don't get extremely frustrated or disoriented when interrupted, you might not be autistic. You don't find social situations chaotic: If you don't feel overwhelmed or struggle to process multiple channels of input in social situations, you might not be autistic. You don't monologue or talk at people too much: If you're good at taking turns in conversations and don't tend to dominate discussions, you might not be autistic. You're relatively flexible about how you spend your time and don't have intense special interests: If you're not obsessed with specific topics or activities and can easily switch between tasks, you might not be autistic. You always say what you mean and don't struggle with directness: If you're comfortable expressing your opinions and don't struggle with being honest, you might not be autistic. You can work in noisy environments without getting distracted: If you can focus in environments with background noise, you might not be autistic. You're not a particularly detail-focused person: If you don't tend to get caught up in small details and can see the big picture easily, you might not be autistic. You don't get stuck on mental loops or perseverate on certain topics: If you don't find yourself repeatedly thinking about the same thing or getting stuck on a particular idea, you might not be autistic. You're not a very fidgety person: If you don't exhibit stimming behaviors like hand flapping, rocking, or other repetitive movements, you might not be autistic. (If i got something wrong tell me and ill change it :) )
I think I'm vanilla flavour autism
I'm just curious - what would be so difficult about creating an outline about some x thing, before researching the x thing? Obviously if you know absolutely nothing about x, that would indeed be impossible beyond "need to talk about what x is". But if you know that x is an animal, then you *can* write - "well I will likely have to talk about what they consume to live, how they procreate, what they look like, etc.". If it's some historical society, then the rough outline would be "religion, fashion, social organization, philosophy, science, mathematics, etc.".
Btw, I definitely have done both throughout my life.
One of my favorite trans artists is Sarah Rose, the lead singer of Sarah and the Safe World. The band is soooo good and I highly recommend their music to anyone who likes swing and alt rock.
found out about your channel and thought it would be a decent resource....then i saw that you only have one video under autistic advice and over 70 videos labeled "reactions" maybe try calling yourself a react channel instead of pretending to help people with autism
